City Tour by Train
A drive as in the old times. Rattle of the wheels on basalt blocks in the city centre is like a living memory of how, once upon a time, the first automobiles were driving in Bratislava. On a motor train you will have a comfortable drive and you can enjoy the ride as in the old times. It depends only on you, whether you decide to be like in the old times.
On the train tour you will see:
The National Theatre – built in 1776, by the famous Austrian architects as city theatre.
The first skyscraper in Bratislava "Manderlák" –built in 1936, at that time, with its 45 meters it was the tallest building in the city. Today, with its height it couldn´t compete with the new local "giants". It has got the name after the owner, who was a businessman and butcher Rudolf Manderla.
The Old Market Hall and the Post Office. The old building in the past served as a marketplace. Noise and cheerful turmoil in the newly opened market place today are slowly but surely coming back.
The Presidential Palace
The palace where is now the office of the President of the Slovak Republic was built in 1760. At that time many important personalities and artists were among the visitors, like the composer Joseph Haydn.
During the tour you will also visit the Bratislava Castle. The history of the town is connected with the castle. The secrets as well the history of the castle will be explained by our guide. After the visit of the castle area we will take you by train along the former fortification walls to the historical centre.
You will come across traces of the ancient Celts, who had on an important opiddum the site of the present castle. There are important archaeological findings from Celtic times, some buildings were even built directly by the Romans, who settled in the nearby Carnuntum, which was the capital of Upper Pannonia.
During the construction of the Tatra Bank was discovered rare Celtic treasure of 399 silver coins of the Biatec type. This coin has become the logo of the new National Bank of the Slovak Republic in 1993. You will see this building on our way.
