Walking Tour with a Visit to the Primate's Palace

Your tour begins at the monumental building of the Slovak National Theatre. Along the promenade you will get to the Gothic St. Martin's Cathedral - the coronation church, you will see the city walls and will not miss the oldest university building in the city and the famous St. Michael's Gate. Bratislava has a lovely Main Square and Primatial Square where you will visit the former Archbishop's Palace.

Primate's Palace was the seat of the Archbishop of Esztergom, who was the primate, that is, the first bishop in Hungary. Hence the name of the palace. Primate's Palace is not only a beautiful building adjacent to the Old Town Hall, but also the place of important historic events. In 1805 the Peace of Pressburg was signed here after Napoleon's victory at the Battle of Austerlitz.

In the gallery you will be able to admire a unique collection of six English tapestries depicting the ancient legend "Hero and Leandros". No one knows how these wonderful works were brought to Bratislava or why they were hidden for many decades behind the stove in the wall of the palace, discovered only during the reconstruction of the palace.

Our guide will tell you the love story as well as the entire history of these tapestries.

Do you know what adorns the roof of the palace except the hat of iron weighing 150 kilograms? There are sculptures representing the virtues of the cardinal Batthyányi. The family coat of arms is covered by the hat of a prince and below you can see a pelican feeding his chicks with his own meat - a symbol of self-sacrifice. The sculptures are representing a mixture of ancient and Christian motifs.

Angels on the facade are holding initials of cardinal´s personal motto Iustitia et Clementia (Justice and Kindness).
